In some respects, the song, and much of the album, was inspired by Chan’s longtime fandom for fellow Southerner Muhammad Ali, who had given himself the nickname ‘The Greatest’ long before most boxing fans could agree that he was. The album’s cover art features a pair of boxing gloves on a chain, and in the music video for the single ‘Lived in Bars’, Marshall is seen wearing a Cassius Clay jacket, a reference to Ali’s birth name.
À certains égards, la chanson, et une grande partie de l'album, s'inspirent de l'admiration de longue date que Chan porte à son compatriote du Sud, Muhammad Ali, qui s'était autoproclamé "The Greatest" bien avant que la plupart des amateurs de boxe ne reconnaissent ce titre. La pochette de l'album représente une paire de gants de boxe suspendus à une chaîne, et dans le clip du single « Lived in Bars », on voit Marshall porter une veste Cassius Clay, en référence au vrai nom d'Ali.
Marshall claimed to have written ‘The Greatest’ during a sound check before a show in Winston-Salem a year or two earlier. Her mother was going to be in the audience that night to see her perform a Cat Power show for the first time, and emotions were high. Out of that tension came a song “that’s not directly related to Muhammad Ali,” she explained, “So much as Cassius Clay”. In other words, it was coming less from a Cat Power place and more from a Chan Marshall place.
Marshall affirme avoir écrit "The Greatest" lors d'un contrôle du son avant un concert à Winston-Salem, un an ou deux auparavant. Sa mère devait assister à son premier concert Cat Power ce soir-là, et l'émotion était palpable. De cette tension est née une chanson "qui n'est pas directement liée à Muhammad Ali", explique-t-elle, "mais plutôt à Cassius Clay". Autrement dit, elle puisait moins son inspiration dans l'univers de Cat Power que dans celui de Chan Marshall.
“It’s about what if he’d never become Muhammad Ali,” Marshall continued, “If he took other chances and choices in his life as a child and didn’t become the great empowerer and freedom-of-speech person he was. So that’s a song for every man, woman, or kid who had that same great strength as him, but didn’t go as far.”
"Cette chanson parle de ce qui se serait passé s’il n’était jamais devenu Muhammad Ali", a poursuivi Marshall, "s’il avait fait d’autres choix et pris d’autres risques dans son enfance et n’était pas devenu ce grand défenseur de la liberté d’expression et de l’émancipation qu’il était.
