Fields Of Athenry
(Les Champs D'athenry)

By a lonely prison wall
Près du mur d'une prison isolée
I heard a young girl calling
J'ai entendu une jeune fille appeler
"Michael they have taking you away
"Michael ils t'ont enlevé à moi
For you stole Trevelyn's corn
Pour avoir volé le maïs de Trevelyn
So the young might see the morn.(1)
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay. "

(Chorus : )
(Refrain : )
Low lie the Fields of Athenry
Là-bas sont les champs d'Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly.
Our love was on the wing
Notre amour s'envolait bien haut
We had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely 'round the Fields of Athenry.

By a lonely prison wall
Près du mur d'une prison isolée
I heard a young man calling
J'ai entendu un jeune homme appeler
"Nothing matters Mary when your free,
"Rien ne m'importe, Mary, tant que tu es libre,
Against the Famine and the Crown
Contre la Famine et la Couronne
I rebelled they ran me down (2)
Now you must raise our child with dignity. "
Maintenant tu dois élever notre enfant avec dignité.

(Chorus : )
(Refrain : )

By a lonely harbor wall
Près du mur d'un port isolé
She watched the last star falling
Elle a regardé la dernière étoile tomber
As that prison ship sailed out against the sky
Sure she'll wait and hope and pray
Sûrement, elle attendra et espérera et priera
For her love in Botany Bay
Pour son amour à Botany Bay
It's so lonely 'round the Fields of Athenry.

(Chorus : )
(Refrain : )

__________
(1) "To see the morn" : littéralement, pour "voir le matin", ici à entendre comme "continuer à pouvoir voir le jour".
(2) "To run someone down" : le critiquer, souvent injustement ; ici, abattre souligne bien le double-sens de l'arrestation et de la désapprobation.
